Phlebotomy is the procedure used to draw blood from a patient into a series of vials. The blood that is drawn will then be studied by a doctor to determine the patient’s health. The drawn blood can sometimes be used in other patients that may need a blood transfusion. The person that is qualified, certified and schooled in this procedure is called a phlebotomist. The phlebotomist must have a four year college degree with an Associate degree in order to qualify for the job. Although certification is not necessary, being certified is an advantage when looking for work. The phlebotomist should be trained to keep a patient calm and to be able to explain the procedure to a patient to keep the patient from being afraid. Along with all of their studies, phlebotomists must also study anatomy and physiology.
